I had not noticed the lighting in this shot, or the way they used color grading to help Faramir stand out from the pack in these scenes - those Weta guys, they think of everything. But a fanfic writer could have fun developing the relationship between these two - Madril seems like a father-figure sort, makes him a nice balance to Denethor.
I know that they did this for plot purposes, Madril helps to explain the context of the situation for us, he's the equivalent of lots of paragraphs in the books, I guess. I liked the relationship between Faramir and Madril (I think that's the name) - the older guy who was always the one to give him good, solid information from which to make decisions. Despite the numbers, though, Faramir and company don't retreat until the Nazgul show up, so their courage is never in doubt. This is the only battle the good guys lose - I think they did a good job showing that Faramir and his guys were capable but just overwhelmed - all the fighting was close quarters too on this one, which helps to convey, I think, how desperate things were.
